We Love TiVo so much that we named our Dog TiVo!!!

It was a dark and stormy night…actually it was a bright spring day in 2004, but dark and stormy sounds so dramatic :-P

Anyway, the family was all tired and cranky from having just moved into a new house, but Dad had planned ahead and was busy connecting this and that.

By dinner time, the whole clan gathered in our new living room with Dad proudly brandishing his shiny new peanut remote.

Bah Doop, Bah Doop, Bah Doop!! Eyes grew wide. Kids all clapped and the much anticipated TiVo era began for the Ross Family.

That was 10 years ago and we’ve certainly had a boat load of fun with our TiVo. We've had TiVo parties with Game of Thrones. We've had countless "Carpet Picnics," with tubs of Chinese Food binging on Doctor Who. Our TiVo has given us countless hours of wonderful Family time.

Then, It really was a dark and stormy night when Zeus, apparently jealous of our TiVo-love, hit the smite button on our two beloved TiVo boxes. Yep, both TiVos struck down by lightning on the same night :-(

They had long and productive lives and when we shared our tale of woe with the friendly TiVo folks, they helped us find a great deal to replace our fallen friends.

Shortly after that, we added another member to our family. An adorable Husky puppy.

What should we name this bundle of love? We first thought, Desmond, because we loved Lost and thought it would be super-cool to say, “Come Desmond. Come over here, brotha!”

Sadly, the dog disagreed and would not acknowledge his name.

A couple nights later, the dog was curled up on his little tuffet, and Dad fired up the TV.

Bah Doop, Bah Doop, Bah Doop!!

Dog looks up.

Bah Doop, Bah Doop, Bah Doop!!

Dog sits up and looks at TV, mouth falling open into a big doggy grin.

Dad says, “You like the TiVo?”

Dog looks at Dad and back to the TV.

“TiVo!” says dad. Dog looks at Dad.

“TiVo!” says mom. Dog looks at mom.

“TIVO!!!!” yells whole family at once and dog jumps off his tuffet and runs around the room like a crazy man.

And there you have it. We loved our TiVo the device so much that he’s been “TiVo, the high-def dawg” ever since.

He’s famous in our little town. People may not know us, but when we walk him down the street, people who may have met him at the dog park slow down, honk their horns and shout “TiVo!!!”

He’s our dawg…and we love him….one more way that TiVo the device has made our lives just a little bit better.

It took some planning to put this video together but there are some products/companies that work so well and are so reliable, that I feel compelled to tell everyone about it. TiVo does just that. It’s a solution that makes a great impact on our daily life. If you have kids, I'm sure you can relate to the greatness of TiVo! This is just a quick video to show how we appreciate TiVo in our house. It was hard to fit in :60 everything we love about TiVo.

I still remember, clear as day
‘Twas 1981.
The day I brought her home, I felt
My life had just begun.

No—not a girl, and not a pet,
And not a game, or car.
The thing which meant so much to me?
My brand new VCR!

It felt quite like the miracle,
I’ll honestly disclose.
For now I had the power to
Record my favorite shows!

And tape them all, I gladly did
From “Hill Street” to the Knicks.
On one cassette I’d keenly store
Three of my favorite flicks!

Oh, sure—it wasn’t perfect.
(Does this sound like sour grapes?)
For I could only dub one show,
And I had stacks of tapes!

But still, it was a love affair
I thought would never end.
Until I saw her—young and sleek,
While visiting a friend.

The year? It was two thousand two
Oh, many things had changed.
And soon, my VCR and I
Would find ourselves estranged.

For I had met a temptress
I had no chance to resist.
I knew from that first glance that ours
Would be a lasting tryst.

She had no need for tapes.
(She didn’t even have a slot!)
I felt like I’d just stepped from
A canoe onto a yacht!

She’d preserve any show I liked
And neatly store their names.
Without complaint, she’d keep them all:
The shows, the films, the games.

She’d zip through the commercials
And she’d freeze-frame live TV!
And if I missed some dialogue?
She’d jump back just for me!

She’d know just where I’d stopped those times
I had to leave the house.
She’d work her magic day and night
(As quiet as a mouse).

She’d keep up with the times
(First Series 2, then Series 3.)
She’d let me tape two shows at once
And watch a third (‘twas key!).

Now, though I’m still in love with her,
Some days I do feel crabby.
Since I must choose between
The Walking Dead and Downton Abbey!

For there are nights I want to tape
Five programs plus the Knicks!
And only TiVo’s newest box can
Handle up to six!

And so I pen this poem
Of the love I still don’t know.
And ask the burning question:

Why I Love TiVo Contest



  1. Eligibility: The Why I Love TiVo Contest (“Contest”) is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, who are 18 years of age or older and located in the U.S. at the time of entry. Void elsewhere and where prohibited by law. Employees, contractors, directors and officers of TiVo, Inc. (“Sponsor”), SweepstakesPros (“Contest Administrator”) and their respective parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, distributors and licensees, and the advertising, fulfillment, judging and promotion agencies involved in the development and administration of the Contest (collectively, “Promotion Parties”), and their immediate family members (parent, child, sibling and spouse of each) and those living in the same households of each are not eligible to enter or win. Void elsewhere and where prohibited by law. Other eligibility requirements and conditions of participation are set forth below in these official rules for the Contest (“Official Rules”).

  2. Promotion Period: Contest begins at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time ("PT") on March 3, 2014 and ends at 11:59 p.m. PT on April 15, 2014 (“Promotion Period”).

  3. How to Enter the Contest: During the Promotion Period, enter the Contest by completing the following steps: Visit www.whyilovetivo.com (the “Website”), click “Enter Now”, follow directions to enter the Contest, complete all required fields and submit your story (poem, etc.) and/or video depicting why you love TiVo ("Entry"). Photos are optional but will not be judged. Entries must follow the submission requirements set forth below. All Entries are subject to a review by Contest Administrator and Sponsor prior to posting online.

  4. By uploading your Entry, you agree that your Entry conforms to submission requirements set forth below and that Contest Administrator and/or Sponsor, in their sole discretion, may remove your Entry and disqualify you from the Contest if they believe, in their sole discretion, that your Entry fails to conform to the submission requirements. THERE IS A LIMIT OF ONE (1) ENTRY PER PERSON/EMAIL ADDRESS PER DAY. EACH ENTRY MUST BE SUBSTANTIALLY DIFFERENT, AND IF SUBSTANTIALLY SIMILAR, ONLY THE FIRST SUCH ENTRY RECEIVED WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR ENTRY.

  5. Conditions of Submission:

    Submission Guidelines:

    1. The Entry submitted must be created by the entrant.
    2. Story submissions must be five hundred (500) words or fewer.
    3. Videos must be uploaded in one of the following formats: .mov, .avi, .mkv, .mp4, .m4v, .mpg, .mpeg, .wmv, and .3gp; may not exceed sixty (60) seconds and 100MB in size.
    4. Photo submission is optional and will not be judged. Photo must be in .jpg format.
    5. All Entries must be in English.

    Additional Conditions of Submission:

    Any Entry which Contest Administrator or Sponsor, in its sole opinion, deems to be inappropriate for publication, will not be considered or displayed, and the corresponding entrant will be disqualified. Entry cannot: (i) be sexually explicit or suggestive, unnecessarily violent or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group, profane or pornographic, contain nudity or any materially dangerous activity; (ii) promote alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing), any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous, or any particular political agenda or message; (iii) be obscene or offensive, endorse any form of hate or hate group; (iv) defame, misrepresent or contain disparaging remarks about Sponsor or its products, or other people, products or companies; (v) contain trademarks, logos or trade dress owned by others, or advertise or promote any brand or product of any kind, without permission, or contain any personal identification, such as license plate numbers, personal names, e-mail addresses or street addresses; (vi) contain copyrighted materials owned by others (including photographs, sculptures, paintings and other works of art or images published on or in websites, television, movies or other media); (vii) contain materials embodying the names, likenesses, photographs, or other indicia identifying any person, living or dead without permission; (viii) communicate messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or goodwill to which Sponsor wishes to associate; and (ix) depict, and cannot itself be in violation of any law. By submitting an Entry, each entrant represents and warrants that: (i) the Entry is the sole and original creation of the entrant and has not been copied in whole or in part from any other work; (ii) the Entry does not violate or infringe any copyright, trademark/tradename, or other proprietary right of any person (including but not limited to rights of privacy or publicity or portrayal in a false light) or entity; (iii) the Entry is the sole and exclusive property of the entrant; (iv) the participants depicted in the Entry have given written consent to its submission in the Contest and use as contemplated by these Official Rules; (v) the Entry has not been previously published; (vi) entrant owns or otherwise has rights to use all elements of the Entry; (viii) entrant is the parent or legal guardian of all persons under the age of majority in their state who appear in the Entry (other than entrant, if applicable); (ix) Entry has not won previous awards; and (x) publication of the Entry via various media, including Web posting, will not infringe on the rights of any third party. Entrant will indemnify and hold harmless Sponsor and Promotion Parties for any claims of infringement.

    BY SUBMITTING AN ENTRY, ENTRANT ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THE CONTEST ENTRY MAY BE POSTED ON SPONSOR’S WEBSITES, IN SPONSOR’S DISCRETION. Posting of an Entry is not an indication that the Entry has won a prize or is otherwise eligible for a prize. The Entry will be the property of Sponsor, and may be displayed, used or altered by Sponsor (or any party Sponsor authorizes) for any purpose without any kind of payment to entrant. It also means that Sponsor or any of their affiliates may produce, market, sell or otherwise distribute products based on (in whole or in part) the Entry. This means entrant irrevocably and forever grants and assigns to Sponsor all worldwide right, title, and interest in and to the Entry (and all works derived from them) as well as all intellectual property entrant creates by participating in the Contest. This also means entrant waives all rights of attribution and integrity if the Entry is used by Sponsor or anyone Sponsor authorizes.

    Any waiver of any obligation hereunder by Sponsor does not constitute a general waiver of any obligation to entrants. Contest Administrator and Sponsor reserve the right, in their reasonable discretion, during or upon completion of the Entry Period, to request that any entrant resubmit the Entry prior to any judging period. By submitting an Entry, entrant agrees that the Entry is gratuitous and made without restriction, and will not place Sponsor under any obligation, that Sponsor is free to disclose or otherwise disclose the ideas contained in the Entry on a non-confidential basis to anyone or otherwise use the ideas without any additional compensation to entrant. Entrant acknowledges that, by acceptance of the Entry, Sponsor does not waive any rights to use similar or related ideas previously known to Sponsor, or developed by its employees, or obtained from sources other than entrant. Sponsor reserves the right to, and may or may not monitor/screen Entries prior to posting them to the Website.

  6. Public Voting: During the Promotion Period, individuals may vote on a Contest Entry by visiting the online gallery at www.WhyILoveTivo.com and following the on-screen directions to vote (a “Vote”). The number of Votes received for each Entry at the conclusion of the Promotion Period will determine the Public Appeal score included in the Judging Criteria listed below. LIMIT ONE (1) VOTE PER ENTRY PER PERSON / EMAIL ADDRESS PER DAY DURING THE PROMOTION PERIOD. Multiple votes received from any person or email address in excess of the stated number will be void. Any attempt by any entrant or voter to obtain more than the stated number of votes by any fraudulent or inappropriate means, including without limitation, offering prizes or other inducements to members of the public, by using any automated program, by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations and logins, or any other methods, will void those votes and entrant and/or the Entry may be disqualified, as determined by Contest Administrator in its sole discretion. Contest Administrator reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to select an alternate prize winner if the voting appears to have been tampered with or manipulated in any way.

  7. Winner Selection: On or about April 22, 2014, all eligible Entries received during the Promotion Period will be judged by the Sponsor and the Sponsor’s agents based on the following criteria (“Judging Criteria”):

    • Creativity– 25%
    • Originality – 25%
    • Persuasiveness – 30%
    • Public Appeal – 20%

    Entrants whose Entries achieve the highest scores across all Judging Criteria, from among all other eligible Entries, shall be deemed the winners. In the event of a tie, the tied entries will be judged/re-judged by the judges using the same criteria. If there is a subsequent tie, tie breaker will be based upon the highest score in the first Judging Criteria, continuing thereafter to each Judging Criteria in order, as needed, to break the tie. Winners will be determined on or about April 30, 2014.

  8. Prizes and Approximate Retail Values (“ARV”): One (1) Grand Prize: TiVo Roamio Pro DVR with Product Lifetime Service, a 65” Sony 4K HDTV, Sony Sound Systems, Two TiVo Minis with Product Lifetime Service, Two Slide Pro remote controls (ARV $10,000) or cash equivalent; Five (5) Runner Up prizes: TiVo Roamio Plus DVR with Product Lifetime Service (ARV $900) or cash equivalent. Total ARV of Prizes is $14,500. No substitution, cash redemption or transfer of prize is permitted except at Sponsor’s sole discretion. If a prize, or any portion thereof, cannot be awarded for any reason, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. All federal, state and local taxes, and all other costs associated with acceptance or use of the prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner.   11. Privacy: The personal information collected through this Contest is subject to Sponsor’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy located at http://www.tivo.com/legal/privacy. By entering this Contest, entrant agrees to the use of entrant’s personal information as described in the above Privacy Policy.

  12. Releases: As a condition of entering, entrants agree (and agree to confirm in writing): (a) to release Promotion Parties, their affiliates, subsidiaries, retailers, sales representatives, distributors, dealers, advertising and promotion agencies, and each of their officers, directors, employees and agents, from any and all liability, loss or damage incurred with respect to the awarding, receipt, possession, and/or use or misuse of any prize, or the use of any photo or Entry (b) under no circumstances will an entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and the entrant hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental, consequential, or any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses; (c) all causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; and (d) any and all claims, judgments, and award shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, excluding attorneys’ fees and court costs.
